John 9: The Choice to See

Pastor Sean Palmer continues our series on signs in the Gospel of John with a vital word for our family; telling the story of the blind beggar healed by Jesus, and his questioning by the Pharisees which followed. All too often, our own assumption of “sight” has left us blind to the greater movement of God that may well be staring us in the face.

Text

John 9: 1-41

“I just had to surrender. I had to get with God myself. I had to separate myself from everything and everybody. God was calling me, and it was either I was going to answer this call or I was going to die.“

— Darryl Strawberry

Reflection & Practice

In what areas of your life and in what ways might God be calling you into a different kind of seeing? Spend some time meditating on that question, and then process what rises up in you with a close friend, partner, or within your small group.

The formerly blind man says to the Pharisees in response to their questioning of whether or not Jesus was a sinner in his eyes, “I am not qualified to say. I only know one thing: I was blind, and now I see.” Maybe that could be your witness to someone this week…. I don’t claim to know everything, but I know that my life is different than it once was.

Perhaps pray this simple prayer throughout the week: Almighty and ever-loving God; show me this week the situations, people, ideas, and places that I have chosen not to see. Open my eyes. What would you have me see today?
